“These are school buses, and there can be no problems. There are kids on that thing!” – Sean Leach, CTO of Highland Electric Fleets

electric school buses are my favorite kind of sustainable transit. think about it.

school buses run steady, predictable routes. the same rides each day, at the same times, with one customer, school districts. they are one of the most widely used forms of transportation for their intended demographic, with more kids riding buses to school than commuters using city bus systems.

ceo duncan mcintyre came up with the idea for highland watching his second-grade son stand at the height of a diesel exhaust pipe. electrifying school transit meant eliminating that, & bringing sustainability directly to the next generation.

electric buses run silently, without a rumbling diesel engine - creating stress free environments for kids and drivers alike.

and the economics check out. a full charge costs about $38, while a diesel fill-up can push into the $300s, though total cost of ownership and charging infrastructure complicate the equation.

but highland's model lit the road for adoption. districts paid for the project build-out, and annual subscription - which included buses, miles, and maintenance.

highland owned the infra process, assumed route management, monitored the grid (V2G), and even trained drivers. it became the nation's largest bulk owner of yellow electric school busses. districts leased from highland.

the company reached 38 states in four years. its second customer was montgomery county, maryland, the largest public school district in the country. highland will power every bus at the LA-28 olympics with clean electricity.

the crew rides e-bikes to the office and bang a gong for every sale.
